Golf: Laki Golf Club you will find in Kirkjubæjarklaustur and in Vík í Mýrdal you will find the Vík í Mýrdal Golf Club. Swimming pools are available in both Kirkjubæjarklaustur as well as Vík í Mýrdal where you will also find horse rentals. Quade bike and snowmobile rentals are available in Sólheimar as well as angling. We also recommend white water rafting down the mighty Hólmsá River.
Hrífunes is ideally located for comfortable drives to beautiful and exciting locations. You can easily reach the Skaftafell National Park within a day where you can go for hikes to the magical waterfall Svartifoss. You can also walk to the glaciers edge. Skaftafell is an hours drive from Hrífunes.
If you continue further east from Skaftafell for another hour you will arrive at the spectacular Jökulsárlón, the mighty glacier lagoon with huge icebergs floating in it. Here you can go on a boat trip with professional guides that explain the surrealistic surrounding. This is very highly recommended!
If you have a four wheel drive vehicle then Hrífunes is truly the the gate to the highlands. An hours drive on gravel roads will lead you into another world with glaciers in the background, surrounded by waterfalls and mountains in Iceland's breathtaking nature. Check locally for road conditions and river crossings.
From Hrífunes it is also ideal to go for easy 1-2 hour hikes around the area.
The Surroundings
The views are breathtaking towards Hjörleifshöfði and Mýrdalsjökull Glacier to the west, Vatnajökull Glacier to the east (the largest ice cap in Europe) and the never ending desert of Mýrdalssandur to the south. Behind us we are surrounded by the highland's mountains and the mighty and powerful Hólmsá River, just below our front lawn.
From Hrífunes you can take a trip to Lakagígar (50km) and Kirkjubæjarklaustur (35km) as well as Landmannalaugar (70km) and Skaftafell (70km). In the vicinity there are also locations worth visiting if you are a history buff since some of the SAGA's Njála and Sturlungusaga took place in nearby surroundings.
